Is it time for a new French tutor?

Hey there! It's been a few months since I've shared an update, but I'm happy to report that my French is still going strong. Not sure if you remember, but last year in French With Subtitles I talked about knowing the right moment to switch up your language tutor or teacher. I practice what I preach because my friend can't keep up with my voice messages saying, "I just had my first class with a new tutor!" I know some people don't like change, but I think being able to choose who you learn a language with is so empowering. In the traditional education system, we don't get much choice. We have to sit in a classroom with a teacher who's not patient enough to answer our questions. Or a teacher who doesn't know how to break down complex ideas into simple concepts. But when you choose to learn a language on your own, you have the agency to find someone who feels like a right fit. And with platforms like Preply and italki (I've used both), the "perfect" person may actually be on the other side of the world. When I first started learning French, all I wanted to do was talk. I wanted to start talking right away to avoid getting stuck with language anxiety. So any tutor who focused too much on grammar, I passed on after a trial lesson. There were also some tutors who spoke too much English. Now after studying French for over a year, I actually am looking for structure. And my newest tutor is so detail-oriented I love it! When we do a translation exercise and I skip over a word, she brings my attention back to it. This type of focus was too much for me to handle when I was just a beginner. But now that I'm at an upper-beginner/lower intermediate level I know it's what I need. So how are things going for you? Do you like your tutor or is it time to switch it up? À la prochaine!
