I love stand-up comedy. Growing up, I used to watch Def Comedy Jam and Comedy Central on TV. Now with YouTube and Netflix, there are so many more options. So the other day I was watching a podcast where comedian Hannah Berner said something I knew I'd email you about. (Yup, I'm a Giggler...IYKYK) When talking about her first Netflix special, We Ride At Dawn, she explained how she initially didn't have a joke that paired with the title. So she reworked one of her jokes at the end to include the phrase "we ride at dawn". Why'd she care? In her own words: "And doesn't the audience love when they're watching a special and you finally say the title and it just makes them feel all warm and happy?" Now why did I care enough to tell you about it? Because I do something similar when writing emails. I try to repeat the subject line in the email. I do it for the same reason Hannah did it in her comedy special. She described it as giving the audience a warm feeling. I describe it as a nod to the reader saying "here's what I promised". And I actually did it in the last email I sent. Did you notice? In this example, it wasn't just the subject line. It was actually the pairing of the subject line with the preview text. Now I haven't tested this enough to know with hard numbers what kind of difference it makes. But what I do know is that email marketing works when you've built trust with the person who's reading. So that tiny, subtle detail is a gesture to make you feel at home in this virtual living room by knowing you're getting what's promised. Talk soon! P.S. Here's the email again if you want to take another look. If you decide to try it in your next email, let me know how it went. P.P.S. Here's the podcast of Hannah getting interviewed by comedians Dana Carvey and David Spade. |

This week I'm working on a campaign for my client's new group coaching program. Originally, they wanted to start the program in August but decided to push it to September because many people in Spain and Italy go on vacation in August. I think this was a smart decision. They were thinking about their leads as real people with real lives. This is the #1 thing to remember when writing emails. You're not just writing to 50,000 subscribers. You're writing to 50,000 individuals who are living full...
Hey there! It's been a few months since I've shared an update, but I'm happy to report that my French is still going strong. Not sure if you remember, but last year in French With Subtitles I talked about knowing the right moment to switch up your language tutor or teacher. I practice what I preach because my friend can't keep up with my voice messages saying, "I just had my first class with a new tutor!" I know some people don't like change, but I think being able to choose who you learn a...
To start 2025 with some momentum I decided to sign up for a workshop called "Just F*cking Send It." The core message was to stop overthinking.Easier said than done right? Especially when you're writing emails for your own business. But I just reviewed the final numbers for one of my email clients and we were able to bring in 6-figures from the email promotions we did. I promise you we didn't overthink it. People say write daily emails. We didn't.People say send content only emails. We didn't....
